3D Models by kokoda.net.au

The kokoda.net.au team have created innovative techniques to combine terrain elevation data from the SRTM and trail data from the 2008 GPS plot, to depict the the kokoda trail traversing the Owen Stanley range.

The 3D Laser Etched Crystal is extremely accurate and is a good example of science and art overlapping.

The technique involves: using a laser beam to permanently cut an image into crystal. 3D laser crystal etching uses points because the process offers no way to draw continuous lines or surfaces. However, with millions of points (Point-cloud image) we have created an accurate surface of the Owen Stanley Ranges. Each point is individually burnt inside the crystal, all the burnt points form the engraved image inside the crystal cube.

The 3D Terain Model – Gun Metal Sculpture is based on the same data as the crystal but slightly different technique to ensure that the track and the mountains can be enjoyed in a tactile way. The process involves 1st creating a Z-Print which is fundamentally a 3D printer that lays down tiny droplets of resin according to the same principle as the point cloud in the 3D laser etched Crystal. Once the 'analogue is created a sand casting can be made and a variety of molten metal, mostly bronze and gun metal, can then be cast. The design and casting is all done in Australia.

NEW Kokoda Trail MAPS by kokoda.net.au

In 2008 the track was plotted using a GPS and the resulting data was used to create a new map of the Kokoda trail.
The kokoda.net.au team used the 2008 GPS plot data, NASA's SRTM data, hillshading techniques, and identified points of interest and vector data from the 1974 survey to create the new and original Kokoda trail Map.

  • The GPS used was a Garmin eTrex Vista Hcx which has good signal strength in canopied environments.
  • Hillshade is a technique where the terrain elevation data is interpreted as casting shadows and highlights with an assumed light source (sun). A variety of techniques were employed to achieve the end result.
  • NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) obtained elevation data on a near-global scale to generate the most complete high-resolution digital topographic database of Earth. SRTM consisted of a specially modified radar system that flew onboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour during an 11-day mission in February of 2000 NASA released V2 of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital topographic data (also known as the "finished" version). Version 2 is the result of a substantial editing effort by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency.1
  • Points of interest were noted on the 2008 trek and from other sources including Bill James's Field Guide to the Kokoda trail and feedback from trekers and Guides.
  • The vector data from National Mapping Bureau Papua New Guinea contributed drainage which needed to be adjusted for the variations in projection and datum from 1974 to 2008.

OLD Kokoda Trail MAPS - 1974 Topos

The most recent authoritative maps available are the Army Survey Corps Topographic Survey Sheets: Kokoda (8280), Efogi (8479) and Port Moresby (8379). Together these maps cover the region through which the current track traverses.

kokoda.net.au has distribution rights for these 3 original topographic survey sheets.

Our team have created an extract from a mosaic of the three sheets so that you can have a single historical AI topographic sheet that contains the kokoda trail region in its original (1974) format. This manufactured topographic sheet has been colour corrected and aligned. It is reproduced on high grade 260gsm glossy paper and makes a great poster. The data from the 2008 GPS trek has been overlayed for reference.
